watergrams

A watergram is simply a photogram of water. They’re experimental and unpredictable but very cool.

To make my watergrams, I use a camera flash mounted to a tripod as my light source. I use the self-timer as a hands-free method for triggering the flash. I place a piece of silver gelatin paper in a tray with a small layer of water. Different patterns are created by jiggling or rocking the tray. Water can be splashed or dripped onto the water and paper in the tray. Different objects such as glass coasters and candle holders or plastic buttons and beads add another dimension. Different types of oil add yet another (messy!) layer. For each somewhat successful watergram, there are at least a dozen unsuccessful watergrams. That keeps it exciting though.
